В 1864-65 вел решительное наступление на южан на Востоке и вынудил генерала Р. Ли [ Lee, Robert Edward] сдаться 9 апреля 1865 в Аппоматоксе [ Appomattox]. В 1866 Грант получил звание генерала армии [ General of the Army]. В 1868-76 в течение двух сроков был президентом США.        El nombre de Joseph Kane se asocia de forma indisoluble a una productora, Republic, de principio a fin. Kane habia dirigido en 1935 un serial para Mascot, que junto con otras pequenas productoras se asociaron para fundar Republic ese mismo ano. Desde esa fecha hasta 1958, en que la productora desaparece, Kane es uno de sus directores mas prolificos. Estamos ante uno de los grandes nombres del western, en cantidad, ya que no en calidad. Entre 1934 y 1975 trabaja en no menos de 120 peliculas, la inmensa mayoria de las cuales pertenecen al genero que nos ocupa. Trabaja con Gene Autry, John Wayne, Robert Livingston, Roy Rogers, Bill Elliott, en tre otros. Despues dirigira algunos episodios de se ries de television y otras cuatro peliculas. Sus mejores filmes son, sin duda, Titanes de la montana y Los indomables, ya al final de su carrera.

       Nacido en Nueva York. Ayudante de direccion desde 1932 y director de mas de cien peliculas desde 1937, primero para Republic hasta 1944, mas tarde para Columbia hasta 1948, y despues hasta 1956 para Universal. A medida que pasaba de una productora a otra los presupuestos de sus peliculas iban siendo mas holgados, por lo que no es de extranar que su ultimo western, que es tambien su ultima pelicula, El gran Jack, sea la de presupuesto mas amplio y, dicho sea de paso, la mejor. Sherman es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los grandes especialistas del western. Una ojeada a su filmografia hace innecesarias otras explicaciones; entre 1937 y 1943 trabaja a un ritmo frenetico para satisfacer las necesidades de algunas de las estrellas del genero, destacando, en particular, su dedicacion a la serie The Three Mes quiteers. A partir de 1946 realiza sus obras mas personales, que, sin pasar de discretas, cumplen sobradamente su cometido.

       Nacido Samuel Neufeld, hermano de Sigmund Neufeld, futuro jefe de produccion de PRC, dirige cortometrajes desde 1926, y largometrajes desde 1933. Probablemente el mas prolifico realizador norteamericano de la era sonora, dirigio, sobre todo, westerns. Por sus manos paso una parte importante de los viejos heroes del genero, en peliculas de una hora de duracion y argumentos eternamente repetidos. Solo leer su filmografia produce cierto vertigo. Establecerla rigurosamente es una tarea ardua, especialmente en lo relativo al orden cronologico estricto, por lo que en esta ocasion mas que en ninguna otra hay que entender que ese orden es susceptible de correccion. Utiliza los seudonimos de Peter Stewart y Sherman Scott.     Daniel Bourn may well have been a native of Lancashire. He set up a fourth Paul-Wyatt cotton-spinning mill at Leominster, Herefordshire, possibly in 1744, although the earliest mention of it is in 1748. His only known partner in this mill was Henry Morris, a yarn dealer who in 1743 had bought a grant of spindles from Paul at the low rate of 30 shillings or 40 shillings per spindle when the current price was £3 or £4. When Bourn patented his carding engine in 1748, he asked Wyatt for a grant of spindles, to which Wyatt agreed because £100 was offered immedi-ately. The mill, which was probably the only one outside the control of Paul and his backers, was destroyed by fire in 1754 and was not rebuilt, although Bourn and his partners had considerable hopes for it. Bourn was said to have lost over £1,600 in the venture.
    Daniel Bourn described himself as a wool and cotton dealer of Leominster in his patent of 1748 for his carding engine. The significance of this invention is the use of rotating cylinders covered with wire clothing. The patent drawing shows four cylinders, one following the other to tease out the wool, but Bourn was unable to discover a satisfactory method of removing the fibres from the last cylinder. It is possible that Robert Peel in Lancashire obtained one of these engines through Morris, and that James Hargreaves tried to improve it; if so, then some of the early carding engines in the cotton industry were derived from Bourn's.

       El caso de Brannon es muy peculiar: en apenas ocho anos de actividad cinematografica, entre 1945 y 1953, realiza un buen punado de seriales y peliculas de genero para Republic. Muere ese mis mo ano, pocos dias antes de cumplir los 52. Allan Lane, uno de los nombres del western de serie B, aunque no de los mas destacados, es el protagonista de la ma yor parte de los de Brannon, quien mostro una gran capacidad de trabajo durante sus pocos anos de ac tividad realizadora. Son peliculas modestas, en absoluto destacables, pero suficientemente entretenidas.

       Delmer Daves, que con el tiempo seria uno de los hombres claves del western norteamericano, nacio en San Francisco poco antes del famoso terremoto que destruyo la ciudad. Estudiante de leyes, cuentan que sintio de repente la fascinacion del desierto. A su vuelta de una larga y solitaria estancia en tierras de Arizona con los indios Hopi y Navajo, decidio hacer cine. Un primer contacto con los estudios californianos no lo disuadieron, sin embargo, de interrumpir sus estudios universitarios, pero despues de terminar estos volvio a Hollywood, donde consiguio un contrato como guionista. Las dos peliculas mas famosas que escribio en la decada de los 30 fueron El bosque petrificado (The Petrified Forest, Archie Mayo, 1936) y Tu y yo (Love Affair, Leo McCarey, 1939). De esta ultima existe un remake, realizado tambien por Leo McCarey, en 1957, An Affair to Remember, interpretada por Cary Grant y Deborah Kerr, que en Espana se titulo, como el original, Tu y yo y que es una de las cumbres del melodrama. Su primer filme lo dirige en 1943; se trata de la pelicula de propaganda belica Destino: Tokio (Destination Tokyo), que a pesar de los condicionantes de su gestacion resulto ser una obra muy estimable. En 1950 dirige un western seminal, Flecha rota; sera el primero de los suyos y una obra fundamental para abrir nuevos senderos argumentales al genero, en este caso el de la dignidad del nativo americano. Parece que el asunto le tocaba de cerca porque es tambien guionista, aunque en esta ocasion no director, de la pelicula de Robert D. Webb, White Feather (1955), con el mismo tono reivindicativo del indio americano que Flecha rota. Toda la decada de los 50 esta dominada, en la filmografia de Delmer Daves, por el western, hasta el punto de que apenas dirige, en esa decada, peliculas que no pertenezcan al genero. Cierto es, por el contrario, que en los anos 60, en que realizara sus ultimas peliculas, se consagra casi en exclusiva al melodrama, en un registro muy diferente del que le hizo alcanzar grandes alturas como creador cinematografico, sin que eso quiera decir que estas ultimas peliculas sean desdenables. Hom bre de estilo invisible, enormemente eficaz, es sin lugar a dudas Delmer Daves uno de los grandes directores de westerns. Posee un universo propio, que le hace brillar en el terreno narrativo tanto co mo en el conceptual. Su mirada tolerante y solidaria, al tiempo que comprensiva; su consideracion del ser humano como algo lleno de flaquezas pero rico en posibilidades; la idea de camaraderia, puesta de manifiesto en las situaciones menos propicias, hacen que sus peliculas puedan servir como modelos de cine maduro, que trasciende los limites originales del genero para ahondar en la naturaleza humana. El tren de las tres y diez y El arbol del ahorcado estan a la altura de los mejores westerns nunca realizados; Flecha rota, Jubal, La ley del talion y Cowboy se acercan mucho a los mejores. Un realizador digno de un estudio detallado dentro del mundo del western y fuera de el.

       Louis Friedlander, o Lew Landers, es un caso notable de fecundidad filmica. Mas de 150 peliculas lo contemplan entre 1934 y 1962, ano de su muerte.
       Dirigio dramas, peliculas de aventuras, comedias, peliculas belicas y de ciencia-ficcion, de ambiente criminal y, por supuesto, westerns. Un buen punado de ellos, sobre todo filmes de serie y un par de seriales. Estamos ante un director competente que hizo todo lo que se podia hacer con el material que se ponia en sus manos. Son justamente famosas El cuervo (The Raven, 1935), con Boris Karloff, basada en el relato de Edgar Allan Poe, Blind Alibi (1938), de ambiente opresivo, y el western Bad Lands, donde hace gala de un uso preciso de los primeros planos. Estas dos ultimas peliculas son productos RKO, productora para la que Friedlander trabajo extensamente, como, por otra parte, para Universal, Columbia, Republic o PRC.

    English engineer, pioneer of non-condensing steam-engines; designed and built the first locomotives.

    Trevithick's father was a tin-mine manager, and Trevithick himself, after limited formal education, developed his immense engineering talent among local mining machinery and steam-engines and found employment as a mining engineer. Tall, strong and high-spirited, he was the eternal optimist.
    About 1797 it occurred to him that the separate condenser patent of James Watt could be avoided by employing "strong steam", that is steam at pressures substantially greater than atmospheric, to drive steam-engines: after use, steam could be exhausted to the atmosphere and the condenser eliminated. His first winding engine on this principle came into use in 1799, and subsequently such engines were widely used. To produce high-pressure steam, a stronger boiler was needed than the boilers then in use, in which the pressure vessel was mounted upon masonry above the fire: Trevithick designed the cylindrical boiler, with furnace tube within, from which the Cornish and later the Lancashire boilers evolved.
    Simultaneously he realized that high-pressure steam enabled a compact steam-engine/boiler unit to be built: typically, the Trevithick engine comprised a cylindrical boiler with return firetube, and a cylinder recessed into the boiler. No beam intervened between connecting rod and crank. A master patent was taken out.
    Such an engine was well suited to driving vehicles. Trevithick built his first steam-carriage in 1801, but after a few days' use it overturned on a rough Cornish road and was damaged beyond repair by fire. Nevertheless, it had been the first self-propelled vehicle successfully to carry passengers. His second steam-carriage was driven about the streets of London in 1803, even more successfully; however, it aroused no commercial interest. Meanwhile the Coalbrookdale Company had started to build a locomotive incorporating a Trevithick engine for its tramroads, though little is known of the outcome; however, Samuel Homfray's ironworks at Penydarren, South Wales, was already building engines to Trevithick's design, and in 1804 Trevithick built one there as a locomotive for the Penydarren Tramroad. In this, and in the London steam-carriage, exhaust steam was turned up the chimney to draw the fire. On 21 February the locomotive hauled five wagons with 10 tons of iron and seventy men for 9 miles (14 km): it was the first successful railway locomotive.
    Again, there was no commercial interest, although Trevithick now had nearly fifty stationary engines completed or being built to his design under licence. He experimented with one to power a barge on the Severn and used one to power a dredger on the Thames. He became Engineer to a project to drive a tunnel beneath the Thames at Rotherhithe and was only narrowly defeated, by quicksands. Trevithick then set up, in 1808, a circular tramroad track in London and upon it demonstrated to the admission-fee-paying public the locomotive Catch me who can, built to his design by John Hazledine and J.U. Rastrick.
    In 1809, by which date Trevithick had sold all his interest in the steam-engine patent, he and Robert Dickinson, in partnership, obtained a patent for iron tanks to hold liquid cargo in ships, replacing the wooden casks then used, and started to manufacture them. In 1810, however, he was taken seriously ill with typhus for six months and had to return to Cornwall, and early in 1811 the partners were bankrupt; Trevithick was discharged from bankruptcy only in 1814.
    In the meantime he continued as a steam engineer and produced a single-acting steam engine in which the cut-off could be varied to work the engine expansively by way of a three-way cock actuated by a cam. Then, in 1813, Trevithick was approached by a representative of a company set up to drain the rich but flooded silver-mines at Cerro de Pasco, Peru, at an altitude of 14,000 ft (4,300 m). Low-pressure steam engines, dependent largely upon atmospheric pressure, would not work at such an altitude, but Trevithick's high-pressure engines would. Nine engines and much other mining plant were built by Hazledine and Rastrick and despatched to Peru in 1814, and Trevithick himself followed two years later. However, the war of independence was taking place in Peru, then a Spanish colony, and no sooner had Trevithick, after immense difficulties, put everything in order at the mines then rebels arrived and broke up the machinery, for they saw the mines as a source of supply for the Spanish forces. It was only after innumerable further adventures, during which he encountered and was assisted financially by Robert Stephenson, that Trevithick eventually arrived home in Cornwall in 1827, penniless.
    He petitioned Parliament for a grant in recognition of his improvements to steam-engines and boilers, without success. He was as inventive as ever though: he proposed a hydraulic power transmission system; he was consulted over steam engines for land drainage in Holland; and he suggested a 1,000 ft (305 m) high tower of gilded cast iron to commemorate the Reform Act of 1832. While working on steam propulsion of ships in 1833, he caught pneumonia, from which he died.
